Soyinka Combine Forces with Good Luck

Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka yesterday held discussions with the Acting President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa Abuja, on how to advance the amnesty programmes of the federal government and the proposed electoral reforms.
Soyinka who fielded questions from State House Correspondents at the end of the parley said he was impressed at the positive attitude of Jonathan on the two issues.
“As you can imagine, what was uppermost in my mind was what was happening in the oil producing region. The issue of the amnesty, the unfinished business and ill-executed amnesty programme which is a brilliant idea,” Soyinka said.On the issue of electoral reforms the Nobel Laureate said: “We also discussed electoral reforms, of which he is a very clear supporter, he is a very keen believer in it, I got very good vibrations from him.”
Soyinka said unlike Jonathan, members of the National Assembly could not be said to have the same enthusiasm on electoral reforms “because the greater number of them benefited from a fraudulent electoral process.”
He added: “Unfortuna-tely, one cannot transmit the same vibrations from the members of the House of Representatives and the Senate, many of whose members are unelected anyway, and would like to leave things as they are because they hope to benefit from this illegitimacy and the whole corruption of the electoral system.”
Asked if he raised issues of the Save Nigeria project with Jonathan the Nobel Laureate said no noting that, “In fact we never mentioned Save Nigeria Group, we didn’t.
You see, we like to compartmentalize things as much as possible, he has his presidential responsibilities, I have my responsibilities to the civil society, of which Save Nigeria Group happens to be one, and the citizen forum, which I am the head, is also another. If I came on behalf of the civil society, I will not come alone.”

It doesn't matter that they were wrong! You need to put your personal feelings behind you - now isn't the time to say what you "really" feel! (that's the Xmas party - joke! :P)
Some areas you should cover when you write your letter of resignation:
Thank your employer for your time there.
Explain briefly why you are leaving.
If your reasons for leaving are going to cause more ill-feeling then make something up!
If you can't think of anything then just use the catch-all excuse of being offered a better package elsewhere!
REMEMBER! "Always forgive your enemies....nothing annoys them so much." - Oscar Wilde. As much as you want to shout and scream at that boss who you hated, thanking them, even apologising for your behaviour can be the sweetest revenge! ;)
And it doesn't hurt your career!
Example of a resignation letter
It's hard to come up with an example of a resignation letter, because like covering letters and CV or resumes, they are fairly personal documents. But there are some general points you can remember.
Personal opening. You know your bosses name, so use it. Open your letter with Dear Yaradua, etc.
Get to the point. Your opening sentence (and subject line) should be brief and to the point. Subject: Letter of Resignation
Briefly state your reasons. Note the points in the previous section about this.
Make sure you have tied up loose ends. If you have work that someone will need to take over, create a separate document to attach to your resignation later which lists important stuff like urgent work or passwords, etc.
Offer to stay a reasonable amount of time. More often than not, it won't be taken up on, but it is a good parting gesture to make. Offering time to train up a replacement (or hire one) is a good way for your employer to remember you (ie, as oppose to just walking out).
End professionally. Thank your employer for your time with the company, stating how much you appreciate it.
Your resignation is a fragile period of time. Writing a resignation letter isn't easy - you need to handle it professionally or it could have a serious impact on your career in the future.

South Africans still love their national football team, Bafana Bafana, but in a surprising move they have thrown their weight behind Brazil as their second team of choice ahead of this year's FIFA 2010 World Cup finals.
With less than 80 days to the kick-off of the spectacular that will enthrall football fans across the globe, a study released by BMI Sport Info, South Africa's leading independent sport and sponsorship Research Company, found massive support for the five-time World Cup winners; twice as much as their closest rivals England.
BMI asked South Africans which teams they would support during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, as well as who their second choice would be if their first choice went out of the competition early.
The survey was conducted in February and March, with methodology based on consumer research among a total sample of 2,400 adults aged 18 years and older. The one-on-one interviews took place nationally, in metropolitan and major urban areas covering individuals from South Africa's diverse background.
"Bafana Bafana definitely have the support of the nation," BMI's Johan Grobler said of the findings, according to Kickoff.com."The South Africans received more than 70 per cent of the popular support, showing South Africans are right behind their national heroes in patriotic fashion ahead of this year's tournament.
"But what was also interesting was the way South Africans have fallen for the Brazilian Samba soccer style that has captivated fans at World Cups across the world. English football traditionally has a strong support base in this country, but the Brazilian support was much stronger than that of England."Brazil were the first choice of 11% of South Africans, but rose significantly to 26% as a second team choice.
England were the first choice for 3% of respondents, while 11% said they would support the English as their second team.Interestingly, total support for Brazil was much higher amongst young adults under 35 years old at 42% versus the 37% overall.
Other teams to receive support were Spain, Italy and Argentina, while African side Ghana, who received zero support as a first choice team, found themselves with 6% when given as a second option.

Lagos State government on Tuesday took a step forward in its bid to complete ongoing infrastructural projects in the state with the floating of N50 billion bonds, being the second tranche of its total N275 billion debt issuance programme.
The first tranche of N50 billion of the bond was issued in 2008 and was oversubscribed by investors.
The state governor, Babatunde Fashola, flagged off the second tranche of the bond instrument on Tuesday at an investors’ forum in Lagos. The bond like the first tranche will be issued through designated security outfits to members of the public for a period of seven years at a fixed interest of 11 percent, trade-able on the floor of the Nigerian Stock Market.

According to Gov.Fashola, the proceeds of the initial offer had been judiciously utilised to impact on the people of the state and the second part will go the same way, noting that government is determined to make a difference in the areas of roads, schools, hospitals, water supply, jetties, light rail, Lagos-Badagry expressway, Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge, among others.
“The micro economic impacts are being measured in the roads we have financed which is improving travel time; it is evident in the children and women hospitals, three of which now give us 300 more bed spaces to ensure that women and children do not die at childbirth;
it is evident in the recently commissioned water projects that have added over 50 million gallons of water to the supply stock in the state, the delivery of desks and chairs for teachers and students as a commitment to develop a human capital resource for our state’s future”, he said.

Social protection is a relatively new sector of work for UNICEF within the overall area of social policy. Social protection refers to actions and interventions designed to mitigate the negative consequences of economic and social shocks and to enhance the social and economic participation of vulnerable and marginalized groups in society.
UNICEF has been actively engaged in social protection type activities through its work in Child Protection, Children Affected by AIDS and other areas, and has recently brought these various activities and approaches together into a unifying social protection framework in order to avoid overlap and fragmentation, and to strengthen underlying national systems in a coherent way.
At country level in ESAR, there has been a veritable explosion of interest in social protection over the last year, with UNICEF increasingly involved in social protection at all levels, from overall policy development and strategic engagement to program design, particularly in the area of social cash transfers. Research, advocacy and capacity building of partners in social protection are also becoming very important, and the technical assistance needs of country offices in social protection are rapidly expanding.
The Regional Office is playing an increasingly important role in providing technical assistance at the country level, as well as providing a conduit for the sharing of experiences in policy and programmatic work across the countries of the region.
However, the rapid increase in the volume of activities has outstripped the ability of the Regional Office to bring together and share, in a systematic fashion, this increasingly rich tapestry of experiences.PURPOSE OF ASSIGNMENTUnder the general supervision of the Regional Social Policy Advisor, the incumbent will: first, systematically bring together the experiences of the country offices of ESAR in social protection programming, with particular focus on social cash transfers, into a community of practice; and second, pursue a research agenda on social protection in the region, in order to link analysis with practice and policy.

For all his individual brilliance, Lionel Messi has always been considered an important cog in a well-oiled machine, a view that only gained strength with his national team struggles in the past year. But Messi is literally carrying Barcelona at the moment, helping the Catalan giants keep pace with Real Madrid and making a mockery of suggestions that the system made the player.
The system is very much broken at Barcelona right now because of injuries and a lack of contribution from Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Xavi sat out Sunday's match away to Real Zaragoza, but Messi didn't need much help, as he fired another sensational hat-trick, including a brilliant solo effort in the second half that earned the 22-year-old a standing ovation from the home supporters.
Messi also won a penalty kick in the closing moments -- after Zaragoza had closed to 3-2 with a pair of goals from Adrian Colunga -- which Ibrahimovic converted to seal an important victory. Barca remains level on points with Madrid, while Messi now enjoys a comfortable lead in the race for the Pichichi thanks to a remarkable run of nine goals in the past four league games.
Only Gonzalo Higuain poses any kind of threat after the Real striker scored for the 20th time this season (five behind Messi) in a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Sporting Gijon. Quique Flores spent part of last week downplaying suggestions that Atletico Madrid might still challenge for a Champions League spot, and the players promptly backed up his words with a putrid display in a 4-1 loss to Mallorca on Sunday. Lagos State Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) yesterday led some members of the State Executive Council to undergo free HIV/AIDS screening carried out in the Governor’s Office in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.some commissioners and special advisers tactically declined to undergo the test when Fashola declared that the exercise was optional and not mandatory.It was gathered that some aides jokingly refused the screening and stayed behind and made fun of their colleagues who offered to take the risk and opt for the test after the governor had entered the makeshift tent on the governor’s office, at about 12: noon.
Though the aides neither refused nor show sign of compliance before living the EXCO Chamber, some commissioners and special advisers at the makeshift refused to enter the tent when it was their turn, thus teasing those who underwent the exercise.Speaking after he went through the exercise yesterday, Fashola urged Lagos indigenes and residents to undergo the HIV/AIDS screening provided free in all government hospitals across the state.He added that knowing one’s status at the ongoing free tests in public hospitals would help to improve the health and general medical life of citizens.
According to him, knowing one’s status does not amount to death sentence since government has put in place measures to treat those tested positive free.”Urging the residents to be vigilant on the killer diseases, the governor said his government has put in place clear and uncommon measures to treat whoever is tested positive freely.
added that the motive of the exercise was to enable the EXCO members know their status, and also convince residents on the need to come out and make use of the opportunity. He said it would also serve as a good opportunity for those at the corridor of power to show leadership by example, adding that members of the state House of Assembly have undergone the test.
According to him, the essence is based on our belief that members of the EXCO should know what their status is and we also believe that if the leaders come out and get tested the people will know that it is a good thing and they will take advantage of it.
“The exercise is going on freely across various state Hospitals and primary health centers in the state. We have public service announcement that we go out to let people know that testing positive is not the end of the world.“Before now, people used to be afraid of the screening, but there are treatment available and the test is confidential. Besides there are laws now that the state has enacted to protect those living with HIV,” he explained.
