Lagos School Get Funds

Lagos Schools Get N13.5bn W’Bank Intervention FundBy Gboyega Akinsanmi, 03.17.2010
Public junior and senior secondary schools as well as technical colleges in Lagos State received an unprecedented boost yesterday as Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) announced $90 million (equivalent of N13.5 billion) intervention funds the World Bank provided to address diverse challenges confronting public schools in the state.
Fashola made the disclosure during the official launch of Lagos K Secondary Education Project at the Lagos Television Pavilion in Ikeja, adding that the project “is a four-year programme to transform the public schools.”Speaking at the forum, the governor added that the state government had set aside extra funding ranging between N2 million and N3 million to support each of the 615 public schools and 5 technical colleges across the state.
He said: “The fund is to augment what schools currently receive in the state. Principals and teachers have for too long cried out for extra funds at schools to facilitate effective teaching. This administration has listened and equally taken action. Through this extra resource to schools, the state expects all schools to progress, and that all pupils can succeed irrespective of the background.”
Fashola explained that the project “is a four-year programme developed with World Bank funding support of $90 million to address government’spriority for human capital development by directly supporting publicjunior and secondary schools and technical colleges through grants,performance-based incentives, teachers’ training and standardised testing of students.
“We expect principals and education districts to take active participation in the management of their schools and to creatively use the funds to meet the academic needs of students. We expect that assignment results of public schools will be made public through various media to drive up standards.
"Systems will be put in place toensure that schools are monitored and principals become moreresponsible for what goes on in their schools,” he said.
